Day two of the Youth Month Commemoration at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg, North West, began with a vibrant session of aerobics that left the youth buzzing with excitement. The commemoration concludes today after two days packed with meaningful engagements. The enthusiastic participation underscored the unifying power of sports, reminding us that in South Africa, sports have continually played an integral role in bringing the nation together. The energy and joy on display proved once again how sports can foster unity and community spirit among people from all walks of life.
Throughout the programme, the youth participated in various sports, including aerobics, relay races, dibeke, street soccer, and tug of war. The host province, North West, won the male relay race, while Limpopo, the home of Caster Semenya, clinched the female relay race. Papi Mokhadi, District Coordinator from the North West Department of Sport and Recreation, emphasised the importance of sports for youth beyond competition, highlighting its benefits for physical fitness, mental well-being, and social interaction.
“Engaging in sports helps young people develop healthy habits, reduce stress, and improve their overall physical health. It also teaches important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Additionally, sports provide a constructive outlet for energy and can help build self-esteem and confidence. Through regular physical activity, youth can foster a sense of belonging and community, making sports an essential part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle,” said Mokhadi.
Among the participants was Itumeleng Cindi (33) from Moshawane, Mahikeng, who took part in the marathon. Cindi shared his personal experiences, stating, “Sports keeps me younger forever and helps me release mental stress. No matter what challenges you face in life, and you feel defeated, start running. You will see the difference. It calms you down, and you feel energised and free.”
Cindi has been running since high school, a hobby that has significantly impacted his life. He is a member of the Zebras Taung Marathon Athletic Club. Beyond his love for running, Cindi runs The Masters X Multi-Purpose Project (TMXMPP), a business he established in 2011. TMXMPP focuses on arts, after-school classes, and grooming young children in various sports and art activities. Through this project, Cindi is making a substantial impact in his community, providing a platform for youth to engage in constructive and enriching activities. His dedication to nurturing young talent and promoting a healthy lifestyle reflects the profound positive influence sports can have on individuals and communities alike.
