  • Conviction of Serial Rapist: Lwando Sfiso Phike (32) was convicted in the East London High Court on eight counts of rape, four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and one count of attempted rape, committed between 2017 and 2022.
  • Phike targeted vulnerable girls and women aged 14–23 in areas around East London, using a knife to intimidate victims, sexually assaulting them in secluded spots, and robbing them.
  • The National Prosecuting Authority will seek a life sentence at the 23–26 September 2025 hearing due to the violent crimes and enduring trauma caused.

After years of stalking the streets of East London and leaving a trail of traumatized victims in his wake, 32-year-old Lwando Sfiso Phike has finally been convicted. The High Court of South Africa, sitting at the Eastern Cape, East London Circuit Court, found him guilty of a series of brutal crimes that shocked communities and left survivors scarred for life.
Phike was convicted on eight counts of rape, four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and one count of attempted rape, with offences spanning from 2017 to 2022. His victims were mostly young girls and women aged between 14 and 23.
He prowled areas like Duncan Village, Braelyn, Cambridge, and near Hemingways Mall, hunting for isolated victims. Armed with a knife, he would force them into secluded areas, rape them, and steal their phones or money. Several survivors suffered severe physical injuries, and all endured the long road of psychological recovery.
The horror he inflicted wasn’t isolated. Phike had previously been convicted of other rape offences between 2016 and 2020—yet his violence didn’t stop. Even while those cases were being finalized, he continued to terrorize more victims, with a further rape case still pending in Butterworth.
When he appeared in court, Phike pleaded guilty to all charges in terms of Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act. In a chilling statement, he admitted that he intentionally committed the rapes and robberies. Prosecutor Advocate Sakhumzi Mtsila argued that Phike acted with full knowledge of his brutality, deliberately choosing victims who were alone and vulnerable and using threats of violence to keep them silent.
“He showed no remorse,” said Advocate Mtsila. “These were not crimes of impulse. These were targeted, violent acts repeated over the years.”
The court has postponed sentencing to 23–26 September 2025, during which the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will argue for a life sentence.
Citing the heinous and serial nature of the crimes, the ages of the victims, and the devastating psychological consequences, the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Barry Madolo, has welcomed the conviction.
“This is a moment of justice for survivors,” said Madolo. “We commend the tireless work of the SAPS and our prosecution team. Their commitment has ensured that a dangerous predator is finally held accountable.”
As sentencing nears, the community hopes for closure for survivors and confirmation of the justice system’s commitment to protecting the vulnerable.
