  • The campaign underscored the importance of collaboration between communities, law enforcement, and government in addressing gangsterism, bullying, and GBV.
  • Young people were encouraged to avoid crime, focus on education, and pursue skills development as alternatives to destructive behaviour.
  • Local residents welcomed the initiative, recognising it as a vital step in addressing gang activity, substance abuse, and violence in Polokong

The Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Southern Corridor Crime Prevention Unit, in collaboration with local Non-Profit Organisations, hosted an anti-bullying, anti-gangsterism, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness campaign in Polokong on Thursday 14 August 2025.

The initiative aimed to educate young people about the dangers of gangsterism and bullying, while highlighting the devastating impact of GBV on women, children, and community development. It also addressed the ongoing challenge of violence in schools, which continues to destabilise many communities.

Social Worker Nomvula Seretlo emphasised that gangs foster fear and violence in schools, communities, and even government facilities. She underscored the need for partnerships between communities and law enforcement, with a strong focus on engaging youth, parents, and civil society.

Sergeant Anikie Molefi of the South African Police Service urged residents to take responsibility for their communities by reporting gangsterism and GBV. “Some perpetrators are our own brothers. We must take responsibility as residents to ensure our areas are rid of gangs,” she said.

Department of Correctional Services representative, Pule Motswaledi, warned youth of the harsh consequences of crime, stressing that detention facilities are not a place of rehabilitation but punishment.

She encouraged young people to choose their friends wisely, prioritise education, and pursue skills development.

Community member Thabiso Mfekwa (23) applauded the initiative, noting the positive impact of government engagement in addressing the challenges of gangs and substance abuse in Polokong.
