SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PLUMBING PROGRAMME OPENS DOORS FOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

By Lawrence Mashabela.
- Plumbing training through a Social Development programme has transformed Sibusiso Mcoco’s outlook on life.
- The 25-year-old Ratanda youth is now determined to start his own plumbing business and employ others.
- Mcoco credits the programme with giving him not only a skill, but purpose and confidence.
For Sibusiso Mcoco, a leaking pipe once represented frustration and lost opportunity. Today, it symbolises possibility. The 25-year-old from Ratanda is using plumbing to change his future, thanks to a skills development initiative from the Gauteng Department of Social Development and Harvest Outreach Centre.
“I grabbed the opportunity with both hands,” Mcoco said. “I’ve always loved plumbing but didn’t know where to start. The training gave me the skill, the knowledge, and the confidence I needed.”
After finishing matric in 2021, Mcoco struggled to find work and lacked funds to pursue further education. Then, in late 2024, he saw a social media post about the plumbing training programme and applied.
The training covered everything from installing fixtures to understanding complex waste systems. It also instilled in him a deeper lesson. “Plumbing teaches perseverance, especially when working in tight spaces or with power tools,” he said.
Mcoco’s new skills soon opened doors. He landed a short-term maintenance job with Lesedi Local Municipality. Though the contract ended, it boosted his belief that a sustainable future is possible. “I appreciated the experience and I’m hopeful more opportunities will come,” he said.
Now he’s thinking bigger. “I want to be a job creator, not a job seeker,” Mcoco said. “This skill has given me the tools to build something, not just for myself, but for my community.”
He urges young people to consider trades like plumbing. “Instead of getting into trouble or complaining about the lack of jobs, try learning a skill. It’s not just for men, anyone can do it.”
Today, Mcoco proudly installs showers, replaces taps, cleans out pipes, and handles general plumbing maintenance. But more than technical ability, he’s gained self-belief. “I’m empowered now. I’ve found my passion, and I know I can make a difference.”
