Fifty-one-year-old social worker Florina Khwinana, from the Soshanguve office in the Northern Corridor, recently crossed the finish line of the 21KM Tom Jenkins Challenge during the Discovery Vitality Race at the Union Buildings.
Khwinana, who joined the Gauteng Social Development Athletic Club in April last year, has become an inspiration to many. Encouraged by her colleagues, she embraced the club’s activities with determination and has never looked back.
“It wasn’t an easy journey, but I am happy. This year alone, I’ve already completed ten races, which makes me feel proud,” she shared. Having been away from running since her primary school days, Khwinana reignited her passion for the sport with confidence. Her daily training routine, combined with the unwavering support of family and friends, has led to remarkable achievements.
The Tom Jenkins Challenge drew a vibrant crowd, featuring a mix of participants ranging from parents with strollers to pensioners enjoying free entry. The Union Buildings buzzed with activity as colourful gazebos, amapiano beats, and a celebratory atmosphere filled the air. Post-race festivities included dancing, braais, and camaraderie among runners and supporters alike.
For Khwinana, running has been life-changing. “Joining the club has improved my health significantly. I no longer rely on medication, and I’m living a healthier lifestyle,” she said. Staying active in the club’s WhatsApp group ensures she never misses a race registration opportunity.
Her achievements were matched by fellow club member Simon Mudzunga, who completed the 21KM race in under two hours. Both Khwinana and Mudzunga proudly showcased their medals, celebrating their accomplishments and the fulfilment that running brings.
Khwinana extended an open invitation to her colleagues: “I challenge Social Development staff to join the club. It’s not just about running; it’s about living a healthier, more fulfilling life.”
Her story is a powerful testament to perseverance, community support, and the transformative benefits of embracing an active lifestyle.
