“We may be where we are today, but that doesn’t define where we will be tomorrow.” These profound words were delivered by former South African football referee and PSL general manager Ace Ncobo at the opening of the two-day programme for the 48th Youth Month commemoration, coordinated by the Department of Social Development.
As the programme concluded today at Olympia Stadium, the young participants engaged enthusiastically in various sporting activities. The 2024 DSD Youth Month programme builds on previous years of youth empowerment, aiming to address the holistic needs of young people. Youth development is a dynamic process that transforms individuals, communities, and society.
The excitement at the stadium was palpable as young people competed with enthusiasm, cheered on their teams, and displayed their dance skills off the field. “This commemoration has provided youth with a platform to reflect on critical aspects affecting their development journey. The session has empowered young people through education, sports as a coping mechanism, and a tool for entrepreneurial opportunities. They have gained knowledge and skill sets through dialogues and discussions. Exposure to exhibitions has paved the way to unlocking the youth’s potential, aimed at fostering inclusive growth,” said Dr Pearl Mlotshwa, Director of the Youth Directorate from DSD.
At noon, as the North West sun shone bright, the air was filled with laughter and cheer. Soccer teams warmed up, eager to showcase their skills. Sinenhlanhla, from KwaZulu Natal, thanked the Department of Social Development for the opportunity to take part in the initiative. “I feel empowered, and it’s been a great day today. I have met new people from different backgrounds. I’m immensely grateful for the access to training and mentorships available to us.”
A young man from the Northern Cape shared the impactful nature of the day and its benefits for everyone, revealing the hard realities he often faces. “Some of us have to deal with some sad realities; today, our bodies and minds have been refreshed. We will hit the ground running when we go back to our organisations.” He concluded, adding that the inspiration from the two-day programme will assist the youth in overcoming adversity.
As the day drew to a close, the young people were motivated to return to their homes feeling rejuvenated and, more importantly, departing with valuable lessons, new friendships, and a renewed sense of purpose.
