MORE THAN R11-MILLION PLEDGED TOWARDS EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

More than R11-million was raised by various stakeholders at the South African Police Service charity golf day held at the Mount Edgecombe country club in KwaZulu-Natal on 24 January 2025.

The money will go towards the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty.

More than 100 golfers from corporate companies across the country took part in the fundraising event, with police officers and business and corporate companies digging deep in their pockets.

Also joining in the event were four beneficiaries who were funded by the trust, including a young woman who will be graduating with an LLB in May, and a matriculant who obtained five distinctions in the 2024 national matric exams.

Through donations and pledges, the South African Police Service Education Trust aims to lessen the financial burden on the families of fallen police officers by funding the educational needs of their children.

Since its establishment in 2010, the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund has assisted and paid for the educational needs of more than 1 000 children.

To date, the trust has assisted 1 718 children, with 54 graduates from tertiary institutions and 146 having successfully obtained their National Senior Certificates.

Eighteen South African Police Service Education Trust beneficiaries achieved outstanding results in the 2024 matric exams, earning a combined total of 17 distinctions.

A total of R18 614 255.59 has been spent on the educational needs of these children since the trust’s inception.

The South African Police Service Education Trust is overseen by a dedicated board of trustees responsible for raising funds and ensuring the continued education of these children.

The Chairperson of the South African Police Service Education Trust board, Vuyani Jarana, expressed his gratitude and said the funds will go a long way in paying for schooling and tertiary education of these children, including covering the costs of school uniforms and stationery.

The South African Police Service management, led by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, alongside Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors, donors and other stakeholders, and encouraged more corporate companies to come on board to assist with this initiative.

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, also acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of police officers in the line of duty.

The South African Police Service remains committed to empowering young South Africans, fostering academic excellence, and building a brighter future for the nation.

The charity event was held ahead of the National Police Day on 27 January 2025, where homage is paid to those who fell in the line of duty.
