Last Friday marked a proud and emotional milestone for the Gauteng Department of Social Development as it hosted a farewell event for its 2024/25 cohort of interns. Held at the Birchwood Hotel in Benoni, the event celebrated the achievements of approximately 65 interns who successfully completed their work experience programme, and it offered them inspiration as they prepare to take the next step in their professional journeys.
The internship programme, aimed at equipping students and recent graduates with practical skills and real-world experience in various fields, has served as a vital bridge between academic learning and professional practice. For many, it also marked a significant transition toward potential employment opportunities.
Acting Head of Department, Bongani Ngomane, reflected on the journey with pride and optimism. “When we started almost two years ago with this group of learners, it may have seemed like a long road ahead,” he said. “However, today, we are proud of the commitment you have shown. As a Department, we are optimistic about the calibre of future interns.”
Among those who shared their experiences was Information Technology (IT) intern Nosipho Zungu, who came from a retail background. “I’m grateful for the opportunity the department gave me. This journey has taught me so much, not only professionally but also about myself, my strengths and weaknesses,” she said. “This is not the end, but the beginning of greater things to come.”
From the Research Unit, intern Maseane Mosia also expressed her gratitude. As the Deputy Chairperson of the Intern Development Programme, she found herself expanding her skills beyond her academic background in Research and Policy.
“This programme reminded me that recognition is not just about the end goal; it’s about the journey, the effort, and the people who made it worthwhile,” she said.
A highlight of the event was a panel discussion with seasoned professionals who offered career insights and encouragement. The panel featured Deputy Director-General Pule Sekawana, Communications Director Motsamai Motlhaolwa, Director for Gender, Youth and Disability Mainstreaming Leon van der Merwe, and Ephraim Mmekoa from the National School of Government.
Interns were given the opportunity to ask questions and engage meaningfully with the panel, gaining valuable advice and motivation as they prepare to embark on new professional paths.
The event was more than just a farewell; it was a celebration of growth, resilience, and the bright future ahead for South Africa’s young professionals.
