  • For 22-year-old Nqobani Xulu from eMngazini in Eshowe, a three-day youth empowerment camp has become a gateway to hope and renewed purpose.
  • Hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development as part of its Youth Month programme, the camp is equipping young participants with leadership skills, discipline, and career guidance.
  • Xulu, a graduate of the Mamba One Stop ICT Programme, believes that this opportunity has helped him dream bigger, with a vision for a future shaped by both creativity and practical skills.

Held at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Royal Natal National Park, the residential youth camp kicked off on Tuesday, 18 June 2025, with 47 participants from across the province. The initiative aims to uplift young people through a structured programme that includes government briefings, motivational workshops, and life skills training.
For Xulu, the experience has been life-changing. “My dream is to be a professional actor, whether on TV or stage. But I also know I need practical skills to support myself,” he said. “This camp is helping me think bigger.”
Having completed his matric in Stanger, Xulu returned home to Eshowe, where he now lives with his father. He says that in his community, opportunities are scarce, and youth unemployment is a daily struggle. Still, he remains hopeful. “Being part of this camp reminds me that possibilities do exist, even when things are tough.”
Xulu was encouraged to apply by Mrs Siphiwe Zondi, a social worker at the Mamba One Stop Development Centre under the eShowe Service Office. “I believe in youth development. I encourage young people like Xulu to not only dream, but to plan and take action,” said Zondi.
Reflecting on the meaning of Youth Month, Xulu expressed admiration for the generation of 1976. “They fought for education. Today, we are standing on their shoulders. We must honour their legacy by pushing forward.”
Over the course of the camp, participants will continue to engage with key sectors of government, receive career development support, and take part in practical empowerment sessions. For Xulu, it is a step closer to building a future that once felt out of reach.
