During the first day of the National Youth Commemoration Summit at Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng, attended by 152 young people from across the country and various stakeholders, one story stood out and touched many hearts.

In Thohoyandou, Limpopo, Murang Mureni emerged as a beacon of hope during the toughest days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Together with a group of dedicated peers, he founded the Isimathawa Foundation to protect and uplift the most vulnerable in his community.

Through tireless effort, they reached hundreds of struggling families, distributing 500 food parcels at the height of the lockdown. “Our goal was to fight the spread of COVID-19 not only by raising awareness but also by ensuring that no one goes to bed hungry,” Murang shared. “We wanted to be a helping hand where there was no one else.”

Although the foundation has had to pause its work due to funding constraints, Murang’s spirit remains unshaken. He continues to advocate for community empowerment and is calling on local leaders, businesses, and individuals to invest in grassroots initiatives that are already making a real impact.

This story is more than just about one organisation; it is a powerful reminder of what young people, unity and compassion can achieve. With the right support, Murang and the Isimathawa team are poised to rise again, building even stronger, healthier communities in Limpopo and beyond.
