  • Unfunded non-profit organisations (NPOs) in Durban recently attended a workshop that provided them with information on the latest legislation and regulations, including anti-money laundering.
  • The capacity-building forum was lead by the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbali Shinga, who noted that unfunded NPOs are vital in supporting the local communities.
  • Regular information workshops run through provincial, district and local NPOs encourage transparency and enable the organisations to better serve vulnerable communities.

The MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Mbali Shinga, led an informative capacity-building workshop at Valley View Centre in Durban recently aimed at equipping unfunded Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) with the skills and knowledge to thrive.

“Unfunded NPOs are vital in supporting our communities, but many face challenges due to limited resources and evolving regulations,” said Shinga.

The workshop focused on compliance with updated legislation, including anti-money laundering and governance standards, which is critical in addressing South Africa’s grey-listing.  Grey-listing means a country is under monitoring by the Financial Action Task Force because of certain deficiencies in its anti-money laundering.

The initiatives, through local, district, and provincial NPO forums, encourage transparency and ensure organisations can better serve vulnerable communities.  “This is about empowering NPOs to remain accountable and impactful,” added Shinga.
