SHINING A LIGHT ON THE BOY CHILD: CONFRONTING ABUSE AND INSPIRING HOPE

At the State of the Boy Child 3-Year Impact Report engagement, held at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton, Talana Mabitsela, a learner from Tswelopele High School, stood before the audience and courageously shared his journey. His emotional testimony offered a powerful glimpse into the often-overlooked struggles that young boys face today, shedding light on the emotional and social pressures that shape their lives.
Talana spoke about the importance of understanding how children develop—emotionally, mentally, and socially. He recalled the profound emotional impact of watching the “State of the Boy Child” film in a cinema, noting how painful it was to see his own experiences reflected on the screen.
He shared the painful experience of being body-shamed and bullied at school. However, a turning point came when he reported the abuse to his teachers. His bullies were held accountable, and through this act of courage, Talana began to reclaim his sense of dignity. His bravery also encouraged others around him to speak out and seek help.
Another learner, Sbusiso, highlighted the harsh realities within his community, where abuse against women and children is tragically frequent. “A month wouldn’t go by without seeing women and children being abused by men,” he said, stressing the urgent need to break these destructive cycles and redefine what it means to be a man.
Together, their stories became a call to action—a plea for society to nurture, protect, and empower the boy child so that they may grow into respectful, responsible men.
