  • A group of 20 trainee farmers from Zuurbekom are gearing up to graduate from their course and begin their own businesses.
  • The trainees have completed a farm training course facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Social Development in partnership with the Philani Development Community Centre.
  • Lesego Goba was thrilled at the opportunity provided, describing herself as being passionate about farming.

More than 30 participants enrolled in a farming training programme are set to graduate from the course facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Social Development in partnership with the Philani Development Community Centre in Zuurbekom, in Westonaria.
According to centre administrator, Thandiwe Sikhakhane, most of the soon-to-be graduates, who are from Bekkersdal, Zenzele, Mohlakeng, and Simunye, are eagerly anticipating the day they will receive their certificates.
The training focused on plant production and soil management, beginning with hands-on lessons. Some of the crops planted as part of the training are already thriving and ready for harvest.
“They planted spinach, lettuce, pumpkin, green peppers, and spring onions, and they’re now looking forward to reaping what they sowed,” said Sikhakhane.
“Despite transportation challenges, the trainees remained committed. They attended classes at the centre daily, where we provided breakfast and lunch.”
Sikhakhane added that most participants already have ideas for what they plan to do after graduating.
“We encouraged them to start their own businesses or cooperatives, especially since government funding is available. We also ensure continued support and monitor their progress closely.”
One of the beneficiaries, Lesego Goba, shared how she discovered the programme while the Philani Development Community Centre was conducting community outreach in her area.
“My friends and I visited their stall and learned about the different services offered.
“When I heard they had agriculture training, I didn’t hesitate. I completed the application and submitted it right away,” said Goba.
“I’ve always been passionate about farming, and I had been searching for this kind of opportunity. I’m grateful to Philani and the Gauteng Department of Social Development for giving us this chance to build our future, free of charge.”
Phyllis Malope, founder of the Philani Community Development Centre, expressed her pride in the current cohort.
“They’ve shown great commitment. We’re looking forward to welcoming the next group in July,” she said.
“We urge young people not to sit idle while waiting for opportunities from big institutions. They can take the first step now, and Philani is here to help, from training to assisting with cooperative and non-profit organisation applications.”
