Ahead of the historic G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg on 22 and 23 November 2025, the Gauteng Provincial Government hosted a G20 activation at the Protea Glen Shopping Mall in Soweto to educate and raise awareness about the global summit.

The 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit, held for the first time on African soil, was a culmination of a year of hard work and collaboration between the 20 member countries under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”.

The Johannesburg gathering marked the 20th meeting of the Group of 20, which saw world leaders and policymakers from major economies set the global economic agenda and address pressing issues such as financial inclusion, climate change, and sustainable development.

This year, South Africa held the presidency of the G20 and used the opportunity to champion Africa’s priorities and elevate issues affecting developing nations. The country followed Indonesia, India, and Brazil in the current cycle of Global South leadership, becoming the final host in this progression.

In one of the largest international events South Africa has hosted since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the G20 Summit was expected to stimulate the economy through increased investment, tourism, infrastructure development, and job creation.

Through its activation in Soweto, the Gauteng Provincial Government made sure local communities were not only informed about the summit but felt included in the historic event.
