Stanger-born Nomasonto Mathonsi, a devoted mother of three and a senior grant administrator at the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in KwaZulu-Natal, has embarked on a remarkable journey toward achieving her dream of conquering the Comrades Marathon. Despite facing significant challenges, Mathonsi’s spirit and dedication to fitness have propelled her forward.

Mathonsi shared her journey with the DSD News Team during her visit to the Comrades Marathon Expo, currently underway at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Amidst the bustling atmosphere, Mathonsi, alongside countless other runners, seized the opportunity to visit the exhibition to purchase her essentials in preparation for the marathon scheduled for Sunday, 09 June 2024.

“Participating in such a demanding event like the Comrades Marathon requires discipline, determination, and perseverance, which are qualities that complement my role as a mother and employee of SASSA,” she shared.

Reflecting on her journey, Mathonsi shared that the decision to start running in 2017 was perhaps the best she ever made, and emphasised the cultural significance of participating in the iconic Comrades Marathon. “I love running; fitness is my lifestyle. As a South African, you need to run at least one Comrades,” she passionately expressed.

Her journey, however, has been fraught with obstacles. In 2019, during a trail marathon, Mathonsi sustained an injury. “I have not healed completely, but I ran my first Comrades with that injury,” she said, highlighting her determination to persevere despite setbacks.

Now, preparing for her first uphill marathon, Mathonsi undertook a 60km route tester marathon, showcasing her resilience and commitment to her goal. “My children and my partner motivate me,” she shared, emphasising the importance of her family’s support in her journey.

Despite the challenges, running has brought Mathonsi unexpected opportunities. “I am truly honoured to have been chosen as the SASSA Wellness Champion for the Durban District. It is a tremendous feeling to be recognised for my dedication to promoting well-being within our workplace. This opportunity has ignited my excitement, and I eagerly look forward to embracing future opportunities that come my way,” she concluded.
