National Lotteries Commission Opens 2024/25 Call for Applications
- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has announced its 2024/25 Call for Applications, marking a shift to a new digital grant management system designed to enhance efficiency and ensure compliance through automated processes.
- The call, which runs from 2 December 2024 to 28 February 2025, invites non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-profit companies (NPCs) to apply for funding aligned with key focus areas.
- Applicants must ensure compliance with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Department of Social Development (DSD), and other relevant bodies, with support available both online and at NLC offices nationwide.
In Tshwane on 29 November 2024, the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) announced the opening of its 2024/25 Call for Applications, starting Monday, 2 December 2024.
Building on its earlier invitation for civil society organisations to register profiles on a newly launched online platform from 1 November, the NLC has also released its funding focus areas for the upcoming period. This marks a milestone as the NLC transitions to a digital grant management system with advanced features aimed at improving efficiency and ensuring compliance.
“This Call will be the first handled through our digital system, which includes several automated features to streamline processes and link us with entities such as the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for compliance verification,” said NLC Commissioner Jodi Scholtz.
To ensure a smooth application process, organisations are encouraged to confirm their compliance status with relevant bodies before applying. Required compliance includes:
- NPO registration with the Department of Social Development (DSD)
- NPC registration with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC)
- Up-to-date tax compliance with SARS
- Registration with sector-specific authorities and adherence to regulations
- Proof of a valid bank account in the organisation’s name with a South African bank
SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter emphasised the importance of compliance, particularly for organisations seeking to maintain donor trust under section 18A of tax exemption regulations.
The NLC’s platform allows organisations to access services remotely or seek assistance at NLC offices in all provinces. Acting Director-General of the DSD, Mr Peter Netshipale, expressed his support for the modernisation initiative: “The DSD is delighted to collaborate on this project, ensuring adherence to the Non-profit Organisations Act (Act No. 71 of 1997). NPOs are vital for uplifting vulnerable communities, creating jobs, and addressing the needs of historically disadvantaged groups, including women, youth, and people with disabilities.”
The Call for Applications will remain open until 28 February 2025, while the registration portal for organisations to update their profiles will remain continuously accessible.
