MORTAL REMAINS OF FALLEN SANDF SOLDIERS ON FINAL JOURNEY

  • The repatriation of the soldiers who died in a peacekeeping mission in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo will take place early this week, possibly on Tuesday, 11 February 2025.
  • Their remains have been moved to the United Nations logistics base in Entebbe, Uganda in preparation for their return home.
  • Flags are currently flying at half-mast across South Africa in their honour.

The mortal remains of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers killed in peacekeeping efforts in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have arrived at the United Nations logistics base in Uganda.

There the bodies of the soldiers will be prepared for the flight back to South Africa.

In a statement, the SANDF said that the standard pathology procedure will commence on Sunday, 9 February 2025. “It is anticipated that all necessary procedures will be completed by no later than Tuesday, 11 February 2025.”

South Africa’s flags are being flown at half-mast for a week in honour of the fallen, with President Cyril Ramaphosa paying homage to the soldiers at the beginning of his State of the Nation Address at the opening of Parliament on 6 February 2025.
