In a proactive effort to combat addiction, Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko facilitated the admission of nearly 70 young people from Sebokeng, Boipatong, and Bophelong into government-supported drug treatment centres. Among the group were six girls and a 15-year-old minor, who were admitted to the Dr. Fabian and Florence Ribeiro Treatment Centre.

Some of these young individuals, previously living on the streets, directly sought help from MEC Mazibuko to access rehabilitation services. Responding to their plea, Mazibuko coordinated with available centres, ensuring their enrolment in a 12-week recovery programme.

During her visit to substance use hotspots as part of the Ke Moja Fridays campaign, Mazibuko commended the bravery of the young people taking this step. She reminded them, “The journey to recovery begins with you.” Social workers and medical staff screened the participants and provided them with meals to mark the start of their rehabilitation.

This initiative underscores MEC Mazibuko’s dedication to addressing addiction and creating opportunities for young people to rebuild their lives.
