• The global day highlights the importance of ensuring that every child has access to healthcare, education, and safety.
•  KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Mbali Shinga told the community: “It is our collective duty as community members to put an end to violence against children.”
Every 1 June the world takes note of International Children’s Day, which is used to promote and recognise the rights, welfare, and voices of children.
In South Africa, the Ezingolweni community joined KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mbali Shinga, at an International Children’s Day event on 1 June 2025 at the AB Gigaba Community Hall, in the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality – part of the Ugu District Municipality.
International Children’s Day coincides with the conclusion of the national Child Protection Month campaign, which had as its 2025 theme “Working together in ending violence against children”.
“The main objectives of this day are to guarantee that every child has access to healthcare, education, and safety,” MEC Shinga said at the Ugu District event.
“It’s a time to honour childhood delights and emphasise the value of nurturing and protecting children, which will ultimately put an end to violence against children in our communities,” she added.
MEC Shinga, together with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), spearheaded the campaign in the Ugu District. They collaborated with several government departments and civil society groups that provide child protection services.
MEC Shinga emphasised that children should strive to eliminate the socially detrimental elements in their communities and have faith in their own abilities.
Several dialogues were conducted with parents, children, and SANTACO KwaZulu-Natal to allow for their voices to be heard. Feedback from these conversations was presented at the event.
The MEC went on to say: “It is our collective duty as community members to put an end to violence against children.”
She urged everyone to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are not abused. ” We have it in our hands to end violence against children.”
