GOLDEN GAMES SHOWED RICH DIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE

- Although the annual Golden Games held in the North West Province may have come to a close, the senior participants at the annual gathering left for home with a song in their hearts.
- Speaking at the closing ceremony on 20 February 2025, Deputy Minister for Social Development, Ganief Hendricks, said: “The Golden Games are not just about competition; they are about celebrating life, culture, and the enduring spirit of our senior citizens.”
- The national Department of Social Development will announce the host province for the next games later this year.
A highlight of the Golden Games, which ended on 20 February 2025, were the vibrant and melodic performances of the choirs, each reflecting the unique cultural heritage of the provinces they represented.
The harmonies, dances and spirited performances of the senior songsters bore testament to the rich diversity of South Africa’s cultural heritage, amazon the audience and highlighting music’s power to unite people.
Despite the challenges posed by inclement weather, the National Active Ageing Programme held from 18 – 20 February 2025 in the North West was a resounding success, thanks to the unwavering dedication of the national Department of Social Development and the enthusiastic participation of senior citizens from across the country.
The closing ceremony was graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks, who officially declared the games closed.
The deputy minister praised the resilience and determination of all participants, emphasising the importance of such initiatives in fostering social cohesion and promoting active ageing.
“The Golden Games are not just about competition; they are about celebrating life, culture, and the enduring spirit of our senior citizens,” he remarked.
A highlight of the ceremony was the cultural showcase, where each province brought its unique flair to the stage through choir performances.
Although the games were cut short due to unfavourable weather conditions, the national Department of Social Development ensured that participants remained engaged with a variety of fun and interactive activities throughout the week.
From indoor games to storytelling sessions, the senior citizens were treated to a memorable experience that went beyond the competition.
In a heartwarming gesture, all participating provinces were awarded medals and trophies in recognition of their efforts and contributions to the success of the games.
The smiles on the faces of the participants were a clear indication that the Golden Games had achieved their goal of bringing joy and a sense of accomplishment to all involved.
It is safe to say that each participant left to return to their homes and families throughout South Africa, carrying a song in their heart.
Looking ahead, the national Department of Social Development will announce the host province for the next Golden Games later this year. This will also spark excitement and anticipation for what promises to be another unforgettable edition of a cherished event for the provinces and senior citizens.
