On Saturday, 07 June 2025, the Itireleng Residential Care Facility for Persons with Disabilities came alive with music, dance, and heartfelt moments as it hosted its quarterly Family Day celebration. The function aimed to reconnect families, strengthen bonds, and highlight the vital role of family life in the well-being of residents.
Social Worker Anastacia Mahwasane shared the significance of the occasion, describing it as a powerful reminder to pause and focus on what truly matters: family and human connection.
“It’s a day to put aside work, responsibilities, and distractions and concentrate on loved ones,” Mahwasane said. “Family Day encourages us to spend quality time together, creating deeper relationships and lasting memories. It’s about reconnecting not only with our biological families but also with chosen or alternative family structures that offer love and support.”
Mahwasane further emphasized that Family Day plays a crucial role in promoting mental and emotional well-being.
“It offers individuals a chance to recharge and find joy in togetherness. This day is not just about sharing a meal—it represents a cultural shift and a national movement toward re-embracing the family unit as a source of strength, guidance, and comfort.”
Khothatso Ramotlhe, a parent who attended the function, expressed her gratitude:
“We are thankful to the Department for creating a platform where we can bond with our loved ones who reside at the centre. I hope more parents will get involved in this meaningful programme.”
This edition of Family Day was notable as it aligned with Mother’s Day, recognizing mothers for their role in raising their children regardless of the situation.
