On Friday, 06 June 2025, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in partnership with Emfuleni Local Municipality and Deaf South Africa (DEAFSA), hosted a vibrant Disability Eisteddfod talent show at the Civic Theatre Banquet Hall in Vereeniging. The event celebrated the artistic talents of Persons with Disabilities from across the Southern Corridor.
The annual talent show is dedicated to fostering creativity and promoting the rights and dignity of Persons with Disabilities. Participants demonstrated their abilities in various art forms, including poetry, drama, and music, thereby creating an environment for expression, empowerment, and community pride.
This year’s showcase featured approximately 150 participants representing various organizations, each bringing energy and passion to the stage. After a day filled with inspiring performances, the Botho Bocha Training Centre was unanimously selected by the judging panel as the overall winner.
In his opening address, Community Development Manager Wandile Zibi commended the participating organizations for embracing the platform and emphasized the deeper purpose behind the initiative:
“This programme is for you,” Zibi said. “It is designed to ensure that no one is left behind by promoting disability rights, showcasing talent, and increasing access to opportunities.”
Lucky Lekgai, a performer from Botho Bocha Training Centre, shared his excitement:
“I’m proud that we outperformed everyone. Now, our focus shifts to the provincial talent show—we’re ready to win again.”
Bafana Madonsela, manager of the Bophelong Multi-Disability Centre, applauded the initiative:
“We’re grateful that our children are given a platform to perform, interact, and grow. It’s a powerful way to support their development and potential.”
All participants will receive certificates, while the winning group will represent the region at the upcoming Provincial Disability Eisteddfod talent show.
