KZN DSD Choir Shines At Arts And Culture Competition, Winning Four Trophies

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development (DSD) Choir has once again showcased its musical prowess, securing four trophies at a recent competition held at the Staple Theatre in Durban. Organised by the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, the event featured nine choirs from various groups across the province.

Under the direction of choir master Mr Sipho Xaba, who also serves in the information technology department in the eThekwini North district, the choir’s dedication and talent paid off with outstanding results. “Our efforts have truly paid off,” Mr Xaba remarked.

The choir competed in several categories, including solo performances and West African music. They were awarded a gold medal for their exceptional African piece, alongside a second-place finish in the mezzo-alto category and third place in both the solo-turner and solo-soprano categories.

“Our members performed exceptionally well,” Mr Xaba emphasised. “We support and respect one another, and that commitment is what makes this choir a success. I see us as ambassadors of the department, connecting with the community through our music.”

During competitions, the choir often engages with the public to raise awareness about the services offered by the KZN DSD. Mr Xaba described the choir as a “soul hospital,” highlighting music’s therapeutic power, particularly for those facing emotional challenges. Several former employees of the department continue to contribute their talents to the choir.

Founded in April 2019, the KZN DSD Choir is unique as the only choral group within the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. Their recent performances have included a mix of choral and indigenous African pieces sung in various languages. “We offer something distinct that others don’t,” Mr Xaba noted.

Looking ahead, the choir is well-positioned for future success, with its members displaying unwavering commitment. MEC of KZN Social Development, Ms Mbali Shinga, expressed her pride in their accomplishments. “Congratulations to the KZN DSD Choir on your impressive trophy haul. Your dedication truly embodies the spirit of our department,” she said.

She added, “Your hard work and passion not only uplift your spirits but also inspire those around you. Music has a unique way of connecting us all, and you have exemplified this beautifully.” MEC Shinga also underscored the choir’s role in promoting community engagement, stating, “Through your performances, you have become beacons of hope, reminding us all of the power of unity and teamwork.”

As the choir prepares for upcoming provincial competitions, Mr Xaba and the members remain focused on their mission to uplift, heal, and inspire through music. “With each note we sing, we weave a tapestry of hope that resonates within our communities,” he concluded.
