SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OBSERVES WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY IN KWAZULU-NATAL

• On 26 September 2025, the Department of Social Development will host an event in the Harry Gwala District, KwaZulu-Natal, under the themes #AskAboutDementia and #AskAboutAlzheimers.
• By fostering dialogue and education, the event aims to promote dignity, compassion, and inclusion for people with Alzheimer’s.

The Department of Social Development commemorates Alzheimer’s Day in the Harry Gwala District, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 26 September 2025, to raise awareness about the impact of the disease on individuals, their families, and communities.

The department, in partnership with Tafta (the Association for the Aged), plans to raise awareness about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, encourage early detection and intervention, provide education and support to families and communities, and address the stigma and misconceptions surrounding the condition.

The themes of the day are #AskAboutDementia and #AskAboutAlzheimers.

Globally, World Alzheimer’s Day is observed annually on 21 September to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, promote understanding, and combat stigma surrounding these conditions. More than 55 million people worldwide live with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

The commemoration in the Harry Gwala District seeks to raise awareness across all generations, including young people, while addressing stigma, discrimination, and harmful practices that affect people living with the condition and their families.
