In a historic maiden speech under the 7th Administration, Minister Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe passionately articulated the central theme of the Budget Vote 2024 as “Reigniting the Role of the Family.” Addressing Parliament, she emphasised the critical importance of bolstering vulnerable families through comprehensive support services aimed at enhancing resilience and self-reliance.

Minister Tolashe outlined a strategic vision to provide essential services tailored to support families, including parenting programmes, prevention initiatives, and targeted cash transfers. These efforts align with the Revised White Paper on Families, approved by Cabinet in November last year, marking a significant step towards safeguarding the welfare of all South Africans.

Acknowledging the immense responsibility bestowed upon the Social Development Portfolio, Minister Tolashe expressed gratitude to President Ramaphosa for the opportunity to serve the nation. She underscored the urgency of addressing challenges exacerbated by climate change and rising food prices, particularly affecting vulnerable families.

Drawing inspiration from South Africa’s history of resilience, Minister Tolashe paid homage to the courageous women who pioneered social change during apartheid through organisations like the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW). She reaffirmed her commitment to their legacy, pledging to advance their vision of a compassionate society where no one is marginalised.

Minister Tolashe rallied Parliament to unite in pursuit of a future where every individual, especially the vulnerable, can thrive with dignity and security. Her maiden Budget Vote resonated with a call to action, marking a pivotal moment in South Africa’s commitment to building stronger, more resilient families and communities.
