  • A young person transitions successfully from child and youth care into independent living through structured aftercare support.
  • Employment at the same care centre demonstrates sustainable pathways from care to economic participation.
  • The narrative underscores the enduring influence of comprehensive social services in fostering resilience, skill development, and future ambitions.

Mfanafuthi Nxumalo (22) is steadily building a future defined by independence, purpose and resilience, following years of support from the Marry Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre, where he was placed at the age of six after losing both his parents.
During his time at the centre, Nxumalo received holistic support from Social Workers, Child and Youth Care Workers, and educators, who played a vital role in strengthening his emotional well-being, education, and life skills. Their guidance helped him navigate childhood challenges as he prepared for adulthood.
He successfully completed matric with a diploma pass — an achievement he describes as a turning point in his journey towards independence.
Through the centre’s aftercare support programme, Nxumalo transitioned into independent living and has since secured employment at the same institution as a Food Service Aider. In this role, he assists with meal preparation, upholds hygiene and safety standards, serves meals and ensures that children receive nutritious food daily.
Now living independently, Nxumalo continues to focus on personal growth and long-term goals. He hopes to further his studies in Community Development, build a stable family life and contribute positively to his community. Outside of work, he enjoys playing soccer to stay active and connected.
“Growing up in a care facility taught me that with support and determination, you can achieve your dreams. I want to study further, help my community and build a family of my own,” he said.
Nxumalo’s journey reflects the positive impact of structured care and aftercare services in helping young people transition into adulthood. With continued support, discipline, and determination, he is taking meaningful steps towards a stable, self-sufficient future.
