Kagiso, Mogale City – Highlighting a key achievement in the city’s commitment to active ageing, the City of Mogale and the Gauteng Department of Social Development have officially opened the new Kagiso Elderly Centre, bringing much-needed services and support closer to the elderly residents of Kagiso 1.
The centre was launched by Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele alongside Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko, as part of the city’s broader vision to create inclusive, age-friendly spaces that promote health, activity, and community among senior citizens.
A Space to Belong, Connect, and Thrive
The Kagiso Elderly Centre offers a dedicated, accessible space for seniors to gather, exercise, and engage in activities that promote physical and mental well-being. From sports and games to singing and therapeutic programs, the centre is designed to keep older residents active, connected, and valued.
For 72-year-old Sebesabatho Peter Koloane, a proud member of the Golden Games and a local resident, the centre has already made a meaningful difference.
“I feel so happy and proud that this facility has finally been opened after such a long wait,” Koloane said. “Now we have a place to exercise, socialize, and enjoy our days close to home.”
Previously, Koloane had to walk over 30 minutes to access similar services in Kagiso 2. With the new centre only a 10-minute walk away, he is more motivated than ever and is preparing to compete in the 200-meter race at this year’s Golden Games.
Community Ownership, Lasting Impact
MEC Mazibuko emphasized that the centre is not only a resource, but also a reflection of the province’s commitment to older persons.
“This centre represents our ongoing investment in the dignity and wellbeing of senior citizens,” she said.
Koloane echoed a strong sense of community pride and accountability:
“We commit to the MEC and the Department that we will take great care of this centre so that even today’s youth can benefit from it when they grow older.”
Active Ageing at the Heart of Service Delivery
The launch of the Kagiso Elderly Centre forms part of a larger government strategy to promote active ageing and social inclusion across Gauteng. These spaces not only offer health benefits, but also help reduce loneliness and isolation by fostering community bonds.
With the success of this centre, Mogale City continues to pave the way in creating safe, supportive environments where older residents can live with purpose, dignity, and joy.
