SOD TURNED FOR SAFE HOUSE FOR GBV VICTIMS IN MOGALE

• Shelters of this nature are critical lifelines, offering women a way to escape abuse, find alternative accommodation, and create a secure future.

The first sod has been turned for a new Khuseleka One-stop Centre in Mogale City – a haven for victims of gender-based violence and trafficked people.

The facility is expected to open its doors in November.

Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko and Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele led the sod-turning ceremony on 29 August 2025 under the theme “Building Resilient Economies for All”.

The event highlighted the strong partnership between provincial and local government in tackling the scourge of gender-based violence in the West Rand. “This demonstrates our commitment to fighting gender-based violence,” the MEC said.

“In November, we will formalise this mayoral house as a safe house for women in Mogale and the West Rand. Already, processes are underway to appoint a non-profit organisation that will assist with managing the shelter on our behalf.”

The Khuseleka One-stop Centre will provide holistic support to survivors, ensuring they are not re-victimised through fragmented services.

Victims will be accommodated for six to 12 months and receive access to trauma counselling, crisis intervention, psychosocial support, skills development, economic empowerment initiatives, and health care.

Shelters of this nature are critical lifelines, offering women a way to escape abuse, find alternative accommodation, and create a secure future.

The Mogale City facility marks a significant step forward in building a safer, more resilient society for women and children.
