INTEGRATED PROVINCIAL SERVICE DELIVERY OPEN DAY REACHES SICELO COMMUNITY

- The Gauteng Department of Social Development joined multiple government departments at the Integrated Provincial Service Delivery Open Day in Sicelo, Midvaal Local Municipality.
- Hundreds of residents accessed services ranging from health check-ups and identity documents to employment support and social grants.
- The initiative forms part of government’s efforts to accelerate service delivery and bring support directly to vulnerable communities.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) was on the ground at Sicelo Sports Ground in Midvaal Local Municipality last Friday as part of the Integrated Provincial Service Delivery Open Day, engaging directly with residents and providing access to a broad range of government services.
The outreach aimed to improve access to essential services and accelerate service delivery in vulnerable communities. Hundreds of residents attended the event to access assistance from multiple government departments and agencies under one roof.
Services available included wellness check-ups from the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), birth registration and smart ID applications from the Department of Home Affairs, and employment services such as CV database registration and Unemployment Insurance Fund assistance from the Department of Employment and Labour.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDoE) provided information on examinations, second-chance opportunities, Early Childhood Development programmes and Funza Lushaka bursaries. The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) offered guidance on farming and food gardening, while the Department of Community Safety also participated.
The South African Social Security Agency supported residents with grant registrations and enquiries, and the National Youth Development Agency provided youth business support and funding information. Various non-profit organisations were also present to assist community members.
Midvaal Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira encouraged residents to take full advantage of the services brought directly to their community.
“As the people of Midvaal, we are delighted that almost all government departments are here to service our people. However, I urge everyone to utilise this opportunity for your benefit,” he said.
Social Worker Pearl Makelefane from the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Substance Abuse Unit said their focus was to reach individuals, particularly young people, who require support to overcome substance abuse challenges.
Residents welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the accessibility of services.
Dinah Motaung, 46, from Sicelo, said the open day created opportunities for young people who are unemployed and vulnerable.
“I managed to submit my CV to be captured on the database and also received information about a free treatment centre for drug detoxification,” she said. “This is what we want to see every month. If possible, government must always come to us and help resolve our problems in our communities.”
Motaung added that it is painful to see young people sitting at home without employment, noting that some eventually turn to substance abuse.
Another resident, Buang Mahlabela, 27, highlighted poverty and unemployment as major concerns in the area, especially among youth.
“Sometimes we are unable to access services because we do not have money to travel. Bringing services closer to us makes a big difference,” he said.
The Integrated Provincial Service Delivery Open Day forms part of government’s broader strategy to respond directly to community challenges, particularly in townships and informal settlements across Gauteng, by bringing services to residents where they live.
