Last Saturday, Walter Sisulu CYCC celebrated a triumphant return to glory by defeating the head office soccer team in a thrilling final, decided by a penalty shootout, during the #AsibeHealthyGP sports tournament at Azaadville Sports Stadium.
The tournament, designed to promote health and wellness, encouraged employees to take a break from their busy schedules and de-stress. Balancing work, family, and personal life can be challenging, impacting productivity. These sports tournaments offer employees the opportunity to enhance teamwork and morale while networking and competing with colleagues from other regions and institutions. Moreover, the physical activity boosts their health, fosters healthy competition, and improves productivity both in and out of the workplace.
The day began with an aerobics warm-up to loosen up muscles, followed by various games, including netball. The tournament featured ten soccer teams from different regions and institutions, along with nine netball teams. The Ekurhuleni Region netball team triumphed over the West Rand corridor team in the finals.
Walter Sisulu CYCC’s soccer team has a reputation for dominating departmental sports. However, last year’s tournament in Cullinan saw them losing the cup to the Eastern corridor. This year, they returned with a clear determination to reclaim their title. “The guys were hungry to win this game; they were determined and passionate, even though it was a tough competition,” said Tshepo Makgetha, trainee sports chairperson of GDSD.
The Social Development sports tournament also served as a selection event for the squad that will represent the Department at the annual National Public Servants Games. All nine provinces will compete for the national title in these games, which are hosted by the Department of Education in partnership with the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture. This year’s games will be held in Pretoria in October.
