UGU DISTRICT MARKS WORLD HOMELESS DAY WITH COMMUNITY-CENTERED EVENT IN GAMALAKHE

• The KwaZulu-Natal DSD and Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) jointly hosted a community-centered programme in Gamalakhe to mark World Homeless Day.
• Director of Care and Support Services to Families, Mr Vusi Khoza, urged communities and policymakers to take practical steps to address the root causes of homelessness.
• The Department of Social Development (DSD) reaffirmed its dedication to supporting vulnerable groups and promoting compassion and social inclusion across the UGu District.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development (DSD), in collaboration with Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS), commemorated World Homeless Day with a community-driven programme held at Nkulu Hall in Ward 25, Gamalakhe. The gathering was led by Mr Vusi Khoza, Director of Care and Support Services to Families Directorate, together with Mrs Thobile Khuzwayo, UGu District Director, and key stakeholders from OSS.

Observed annually on 10 October, World Homeless Day aims to raise awareness on the challenges faced by homeless people while encouraging policy dialogue, community engagement, and the development of sustainable solutions to address homelessness.

During his keynote address, Mr Khoza emphasised the significance of the occasion, stating that although the commemoration serves a symbolic purpose, its impact is substantive and enduring. He remarked, “The observance of World Homeless Day extends beyond raising awareness; it represents a call for communities to mobilise, encourages the evolution of policy, and promotes a deeper understanding of and response to the underlying causes of homelessness.”

The programme brought together local stakeholders, community leaders, service providers, and members of the public to engage in open dialogue, share resources, and chart practical steps toward mitigating homelessness in the district.

Through this initiative, the KZN Department of Social Development reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, strengthening families, and promoting an inclusive, compassionate society.
