Free State MEC of Social Development, Ms Mathabo Leeto, is deeply saddened by the passing of a client at the SASSA Bloemfontein offices. “It is with unfathomable sorrow that we confirm the tragic death of a client whose name cannot be disclosed for safety reasons,” stated MEC Mathabo Leeto. The client was at the office on 1 July 2024 to apply for a disability grant and child support grant. At approximately 12:20 PM, another visitor noticed that the client was not moving and alerted an official.

MEC Leeto expressed her heartfelt condolences to the community, family, and friends of the deceased. Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and family members were contacted immediately. Family members were promptly brought to the SASSA office to complete the necessary processes. They confirmed that the client had a heart condition and was under medication. Following all necessary protocols, the client was confirmed deceased by the caretaker and was taken to the mortuary with the family’s approval.

“Our immediate thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. We will dispatch our social workers and officials to provide psycho-social support and counselling,” said MEC Leeto. She also appealed to the community, family, and friends to cooperate fully with authorities as they conduct the necessary examinations surrounding this tragic event.

MEC Leeto highlighted that SASSA prioritises the safety and well-being of its clients and staff. An internal review has been conducted to ensure that all safety protocols are adhered to. “As the department, we send our love and deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased,” she concluded.
