TEMBISA OLD AGE HOME PROVIDES DIGNITY, CARE AND SUPPORT TO OLDER PERSONS

The Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Tembisa Old Age Home continues to play a vital role in improving the lives of older persons by providing care, protection and essential support services within the community.

The facility currently accommodates 28 older persons and has the capacity to house up to 56 residents who require full-time care. Through partnerships with non-profit organisations, the home provides a range of essential services, including nutritious daily meals, safe accommodation, social support and emotional care.

These services are designed to ensure that older persons live with dignity, comfort and a strong sense of belonging.
Caregivers at the facility remain committed to addressing both the physical and emotional needs of residents. Their work contributes to creating a safe and nurturing environment where older persons feel respected, valued and well cared for.

Beyond providing accommodation, the home promotes social interaction, mental stimulation and overall wellbeing through various programmes and activities. Ongoing collaboration with stakeholders and community partners continues to strengthen the facility’s service offering.

Community members in need of support for elderly relatives are encouraged to contact the centre, which operates 24 hours a day and is staffed by trained professionals who provide continuous care and monitoring. A social worker is also available to assist with intake applications and ensure that the process is handled with care and professionalism.

Speaking on the importance of such facilities, the home’s manager, Penny Letsoalo, emphasised the responsibility of caring for older persons.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that our elders receive the care, respect and protection they deserve, living in a supportive environment where they can age with dignity,” she said.

As the demand for elderly care continues to grow, Tembisa Old Age Home aims to reach full capacity so that more older persons can benefit from its services.
