SASSA SELF-SERVICE SYSTEM RESTORED, BRINGING RELIEF TO GRANT BENEFICIARIES

- Beneficiaries can once again complete life certification from home, saving time and transport costs.
- Improved system stability reduces long queues and delays at SASSA offices.
- Secure biometric verification ensures grants are paid to the rightful recipients.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that its self-service system is now fully operational following earlier technical challenges that disrupted access for some beneficiaries.
The temporary system glitches affected beneficiaries who had been prompted to complete their eLife Certification through the SASSA online portal, resulting in delays and long queues at local offices. The Agency has since resolved these issues and issued an apology to those impacted.
eLife Certification is a digital platform that enables social grant beneficiaries to verify their status remotely, without visiting a SASSA office. The system is accessible via the SASSA Online Services Portal and uses secure biometric verification through an electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) process.
SASSA has encouraged beneficiaries with access to digital tools to use the platform, highlighting its convenience and efficiency. By enabling remote verification, the system reduces the need for travel, lowers costs for beneficiaries, and eases congestion at service points, particularly during peak periods.
e-Life Certification is recommended for SASSA clients for the following reasons:
• Convenience: Beneficiaries can certify their life status without visiting SASSA offices, reducing travel costs and saving time.
• Reduced Queues: By shifting to self-service, SASSA aims to alleviate congestion at local offices, especially during peak periods.
• Scalability: The digital platform enables SASSA to process a higher volume of certifications efficiently, ensuring timely grant payments.
• Security: Biometric verification and integration with Home Affairs systems enhance the accuracy and reliability of the certification process.
The Agency emphasised that life certification remains a legal requirement under the Social Assistance Act. This process ensures that social grants are paid only to eligible individuals, safeguarding public funds and maintaining the integrity of the system.
Beneficiaries are required to complete life certification annually. However, those specifically identified by SASSA for immediate verification must comply within the stipulated timeframe, regardless of their grant type or age. Failure to do so may result in delays or suspension of grant payments, as non-compliance could be interpreted as an indication that the beneficiary is no longer eligible.
The enhanced digital system is also designed to improve efficiency and security. Integration with other government departments, including identity verification systems, strengthens the accuracy of the process and reduces the risk of fraud.
SASSA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the right grant is paid to the right person at the right time. The Agency has also called on the public to report any suspected social grant fraud through its toll-free call centre or official communication channels.
