Ramaphosa Appoints New Higher Education Leadership Team

- President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed a new leadership duo to steer the Department of Higher Education and Training.
- The appointments are aimed at strengthening the sector’s capacity to deliver quality post-school education and training.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mr Buti Kgwaridi Manamela as the new Minister of Higher Education and Training, following his previous role as Deputy Minister since the seventh administration. His promotion affirms government’s commitment to continuity and experienced leadership in a critical portfolio.
In a further announcement, the President named Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube as the new Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training. Dr Dube-Ncube brings a strong governance track record, having served as MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and as Premier of KwaZulu-Natal.
Her appointment was made in terms of Section 93(b) of the Constitution, which allows the President to appoint up to two Deputy Ministers from outside the National Assembly.
This reshuffle is expected to bring renewed focus and vigour to the department’s efforts in expanding access to higher education and improving the quality of post-school learning opportunities for all South Africans.
