On 16 May 2025, the MEC for Social Development visited the Hobhouse community in the Free State to emphasize the importance of strong, united families. Families are the backbone of our communities, and when they remain connected, they thrive—reducing the need for social welfare interventions.

Profiling in Hobhouse revealed that grandparents head many households. The Department of Social Development is implementing targeted programmes to bridge the intergenerational gap. These initiatives focus on social and behavioural change, empowering grandparents with the tools and support needed to raise the next generation effectively.

The International Day of Families, observed globally on 15 May, highlights the essential role families serve as the cornerstone of society. Proclaimed by the United Nations, the day highlights the values families instill—such as respect, responsibility, integrity, equality, and justice—while acknowledging the challenges they face.

These programmes are designed to address the unique challenges faced by grandparent-led households, offering educational workshops, counseling services, and community activities that foster mutual understanding and cooperation between generations. By equipping grandparents with practical skills and knowledge, the Department of Social Development aims to ensure that these households can provide a stable and nurturing environment for their children.

The visit by the MEC for Social Development underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening family units as a means to promote social cohesion and reduce dependency on social welfare. During the visit, the MEC interacted with various families, listening to their stories and concerns, and reassured them of continued support through these transformative programmes.

As communities across the globe celebrate the International Day of Families, Hobhouse stands as a testament to the positive impact of dedicated social initiatives. Through concerted efforts and community engagement, the Department of Social Development is paving the way for stronger, more resilient family structures, where every generation can thrive and contribute to a vibrant, value-driven society.
