The Department of Social Development (DSD), in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, has successfully hosted a two-day Intergenerational Dialogue in Boksburg on 25–26 March 2026, aimed at strengthening parent–child relationships and promoting open communication within families.
Bringing together mothers, fathers, and their children from across Gauteng, the dialogue created a safe and inclusive platform for families to engage meaningfully, reflect on their experiences, and build stronger bonds. Held under the theme “Creating Connections and Initiating Intergenerational Dialogue,” the programme forms part of the Department’s ongoing Parent–Child Dialogue initiative.
The sessions focused on enhancing communication across generations while addressing social pressures that impact family dynamics. Participants were afforded an opportunity to reflect on their personal journeys, share their lived experiences, and assess the positive changes brought about by the programme. The engagement also enabled facilitators to identify areas where additional support is required for both parents and children, while refining the intervention model to better respond to community needs.
As part of the programme, families participated in early-morning physical activities designed to encourage interaction and strengthen relationships in a relaxed, supportive environment. These activities helped build trust and set the tone for open, meaningful discussions throughout the sessions.
The concluding engagements placed strong emphasis on co-parenting, self-reflection, and self-awareness, encouraging participants to take responsibility for their roles within the family unit. These elements are central to fostering healthier relationships and nurturing supportive home environments.
As the custodian of the White Paper on Families, DSD continues to prioritise programmes that promote connection, trust, and effective communication within families. The Department reaffirmed its commitment to providing structured psychosocial support through dialogue-based interventions that respond to the evolving needs of South African communities.
Participants were presented with certificates and tokens of appreciation in recognition of their commitment to the programme.
Overall, the Intergenerational Dialogue underscored the importance of sustained engagement, emotional understanding, and collaborative family dynamics as key drivers in building stronger, more resilient families across the country.
