ICROP BRINGS HOPE AND OPPORTUNITY TO SOWETO YOUTH AHEAD OF YOUTH DAY

• Young beneficiaries shared how the initiative connected them to opportunities for education, employment and economic empowerment.
• The programme demonstrated government’s commitment to bringing services closer to communities while empowering young people to build sustainable futures.

The Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP), held at Power Park Grounds in Pimville on the eve of Youth Day, brought essential government services, opportunities and renewed hope directly to the people of Soweto.

Hundreds of residents gathered to access a wide range of services designed to empower communities, connect young people to economic opportunities and ensure that vulnerable citizens receive the support they need.

Beyond accessing services, many young people who attended the outreach spoke passionately about their aspirations for a better future. While acknowledging the temporary relief provided by social assistance programmes such as the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, they expressed a strong desire to seize available opportunities, achieve economic independence and build sustainable livelihoods.
One of the inspiring beneficiaries was Rethabile Tshabalala (23) from Orlando East, a Criminology student at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus.

Rethabile attended the outreach in search of information about part-time employment opportunities to help support her family. Raised by a single mother who is unemployed and caring for three children, she understands the challenges faced by many young people in similar circumstances.

“I came here with faith that I would find information that could help me secure work and support my family,” she said.
After visiting several exhibition stands, Rethabile received assistance at the SA Youth Mobi stand, where officials helped her register on a platform that connects young people with employment opportunities suited to their qualifications and interests.

“I am happy because I now know where to look for opportunities and how to apply for jobs more easily,” she said.
Another beneficiary, 18-year-old Oratile Mlangeni from Pimville Zone 2, described attending the outreach as a blessing in disguise.
Having completed matric last year, Oratile accompanied a friend to the programme and did not expect to receive assistance herself. During the outreach, she successfully applied for and received approval for her SRD grant on-site.

She also opened her first bank account at the FNB service stand.
“I only came to accompany my friend, but I ended up receiving help myself. This has truly been a blessing in disguise,”she said.
Oratile added that having multiple services available in one location made the process significantly easier and less intimidating.

“I don’t think I would have been able to get all these things done on my own. Having all the services here helped me a lot.”
The outreach also provided support to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Lerato Mlangeni (33) from Orlando East, who operates a catering business with her sisters, visited the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) stand seeking information about funding opportunities to expand

the family business.
Officials assisted her with guidance on strengthening her business proposal and provided information on funding opportunities available through the agency.

Lerato described the experience as life-changing.
“Finally, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.”After struggling for so long, I believe this funding could make a significant difference for my family and our business. I truly appreciate that government has brought these services closer to our community.”

The experiences of Rethabile, Oratile and Lerato reflect the tangible impact of ICROP in bringing government services directly to communities while creating pathways to education, employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

As South Africa commemorates Youth Day, the outreach served as a powerful reminder that when government, communities and partners work together, young people are empowered not only to dream of a better future but also to take meaningful steps towards building it.
