The community of Nquthu is celebrating moments of joy and gratitude after the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development fulfilled commitments made during an Operation Sukuma Sakhe community engagement in July this year.
During the July visit, Ms Mbali Shinga, MEC for Social Development, met with residents who shared their aspirations and outlined various challenges affecting their livelihoods. Among the key requests was support for the Ingamasu Farming Project, a local initiative devoted to promoting food security through community-based agriculture.
In response to this identified need, the Department, in partnership with the Al-Imdaad Foundation, provided the Ingamasu Farming Project with essential gardening tools. This support aims to boost agricultural production and promote the long-term sustainability of the project, thereby advancing food security within the community.
This collaborative effort builds on previous Department initiatives, such as the assistance provided to Mrs Nelisiwe Zulu, a 60-year-old resident. Mrs Zulu received a sewing machine, empowering her to start a small business and generate a stable income. Together, these initiatives illustrate the Department’s ongoing commitment to transforming lives through practical, community-driven development and partnerships that encourage self-reliance and economic independence.
MEC for Social Development, Ms Mbali Shinga, emphasised the Department’s dedication to moving beyond a traditional welfare-based model and instead fostering long-term development and self-reliance among community members. She highlighted the importance of fulfilling commitments made to the people of Nquthu, noting that the recent initiatives were not simply about distributing resources, but about providing essential tools that empower both individuals and families to sustain themselves independently.
Expressing her gratitude, MEC Shinga acknowledged the pivotal role of the Al-Imdaad Foundation in supporting these efforts, underscoring the value of partnership in achieving meaningful, lasting change within communities.
Representing the Al-Imdaad Foundation, Mr Abed Karrim expressed his appreciation for the collaborative relationship between the Foundation and the DSD Development. He emphasised that their joint efforts embody a shared commitment to sustainable community development. Mr Karrim highlighted that through this partnership with the Department, the Foundation can extend its reach to more communities, providing vital resources that have a transformative impact on people’s lives. “Our partnership with DSD enables us to reach more communities and provide resources that truly transform lives. Together, we are restoring hope and dignity to the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Karrim.
Community members also shared their heartfelt gratitude for the promises that have been fulfilled. They noted that these actions not only address immediate needs but also play a crucial role in restoring trust in government. Such initiatives, they said, reinforce the spirit of Ubuntu, emphasising unity and mutual support within their community.
Closing the event, MEC Shinga reiterated the Department’s ongoing commitment to prioritising programs that advance self-sufficiency, empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods for all communities throughout KwaZulu-Natal. Her remarks reinforced the Department’s focus on fostering independence and resilience, ensuring that the positive changes brought about by these partnerships continue to benefit residents well into the future.
