  • Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Mpumi Luthuli is representing South Africa at the Chicago Marathon this week.
  • The Desmond Tutu Child and Youth Care Centre Head balances her leadership role with a passion for long-distance running.
  • Her journey reflects the Department’s commitment to nurturing talent, resilience, and wellbeing among staff.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development’s very own Mpumi Luthuli is set to represent both the Department and the country at the Chicago Marathon in the United States this week.
Luthuli, who serves as Head of the Desmond Tutu Child and Youth Care Centre, says she is mentally and physically prepared for the challenge and is determined to bring the medal home.
This is not her first experience on the international running circuit. She has already participated in prestigious races such as the Marathon de Paris in France, the Marathon de Lisboa in Portugal, and the Kili Marathon in Kigali. She qualified for the Chicago Marathon after successfully completing the Kaapsehoop Marathon in November last year.
“I am so excited to be part of this international marathon, and I want to encourage my colleagues not to look down on themselves. They too can compete on the global stage. I will make sure I don’t disappoint you,” said Luthuli with a smile.
She also expressed her appreciation to the Department’s Communication Team for highlighting her journey. “In my previous races, I participated quietly without anyone knowing. I’m grateful for the support this time, and I hope more of my colleagues will join international competitions in future,” she said.
Balancing her passion for running with her professional responsibilities is no small feat. Working far from home, she dedicates Tuesdays and Fridays to training and reserves weekends for long-distance runs. Luthuli also credits her husband, a fellow runner, for his unwavering support, including helping to fund some of her competitions.
An all-round sports enthusiast, Luthuli also participates in departmental sports activities, including netball, and is a proud member of the Departmental Running Club.
As she prepares to take on the 42-kilometre race in Chicago, the Department stands firmly behind her, cheering on one of its own as she continues to make strides on the international stage.
