  • The Mentoring a Boy Child programme was launched on 1 September as part of the Department’s youth development strategy to support the emotional, psychological, and social development of young boys.
  • The sessions focused on essential topics including substance abuse, mental health resilience, grief, and gender identity, thereby fostering an environment conducive to open dialogue and educational engagement.
  • Officials and facilitators stated that mentoring boys supports families and communities, helping every child pursue education and personal growth.

On Monday, 1 September, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, the Departments of Education and Health, together with Non-Profit Organisations, hosted the Mentoring a Boy Child event at Wozanibone Intern Farm School in Kameelzynkraal, Northern Corridor.
The initiative forms part of the department’s broader commitment to positive youth development, specifically addressing the social, emotional, and psychological needs of young boys. Through mentorship and education, the programme aims to equip learners with the tools and values necessary to make responsible decisions, face challenges, and grow into confident, resilient leaders.
The day featured sessions facilitated by experienced mentors and guest speakers. Topics included substance abuse prevention, sexual orientation and gender identity, coping with grief, and strengthening mental health resilience. Social workers and educators created a safe, inclusive space for learners to ask questions, share experiences, and gain practical life skills.
Mr. Gladstone Baloyi from the Department of Social Development emphasised the long-term impact of such mentorship. “When we mentor a boy child, we invest in tomorrow’s leaders,” he said. “Empowering boys to make positive life choices is a shared responsibility and one that builds stronger families and safer communities.”
The programme concluded with reflections from learners and stakeholders, emphasising the Department’s commitment to leaving no child behind in the pursuit of education, wellness, and personal development.
