  • Social Development, Correctional Services, SAPS, and community stakeholders united to tackle gangsterism at Zakheni Secondary School.
  • The dialogue session encouraged pupils to focus on education and resist negative peer influence.
  • Parents and community members were urged to work together to prevent and report gang activity.

The Mpumalanga Department of Social Development (DSD), in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Community Safety, the South African Police Services (SAPS), and other stakeholders brought a little bit of hope to pupils, teachers, and parents of Zakheni Secondary School.
On 22 October 2025, the collaborative partners convened an Anti-Gangsterism Educational and Dialogue Session aimed at raising awareness and fostering positive behavioural change among leaners. KwaMhlanga probation officer Jeanette Shabangu, who works closely with SAPS, community safety structures and Zakheni Secondary School, highlighted the importance of early intervention in curbing youth involvement in crime.
“I felt that there is a need to come and raise awareness for the kids on the dangers of gangsterism.” She said.
The session also sought to motivate learners to prioritise their education and to make constructive life choices. Pupils participated in a short question-and-answer session to assist in identifying known gangster groups in the area, their behaviors, dress codes, and who they target.
One pupil encouraged her fellow schoolmates not to idolise behaviours exhibited by gangsters. She thanked all the stakeholders who were present for taking the time to educate them about gangsterism. “I will take what I have learnt here today and educate others”, she affirmed.
In her closing remarks, Ms Shabangu called on parents and communities to work together with their children in fighting gangsterism, stressing that they should not hesitate to report or seek assistance when their children are affected. She concluded by urging learners to apply the knowledge gained to make informed decisions and contribute to a safer school environment.
