A LEGACY OF SERVICE: SENIOR SECURITY OFFICER MR J. VAN ROOI RETIRES AFTER THREE DECADES
By Lerato Khateane
After 29 years of dedicated service, Mr J. Van Rooi, Senior Security Officer, bid farewell to public service. His colleagues in the security division organised a retirement function at the Protea Hotel in Bloemfontein on 5 October to wish him a joyful retirement filled with love, relaxation, and new personal growth alongside family and friends.
Mr Van Rooi joined public service in 1995, shortly after South Africa’s democratic transition, beginning his career at the Department of Public Works as a Security Officer. His exceptional professionalism soon earned him a transfer to the Department of Police, Roads, and Transport in 1999. Known respectfully as “Ntate Van Rooi” by colleagues, he demonstrated remarkable dedication, loyalty, and expertise throughout his career, serving in departments including Health and, most recently, Social Development. Rising through the ranks, he held key positions such as Messenger in the Office of the MEC and was later promoted to Senior Security Officer.
Mr Van Rooi’s unwavering commitment and exemplary service made him an invaluable asset to the public sector. His retirement, effective 30 September 2024, marked the end of an era for Social Development. Dressed in gold and black, colleagues in the security section celebrated his career as a true public servant known for his respect and humility, even amid the challenges front desk personnel face in dealing with departmental clients daily.
His tireless contributions inspired everyone to express their heartfelt gratitude for his selfless service, wishing him well in all his future endeavours. In his farewell message, Mr Van Rooi encouraged his colleagues to persevere in their duty to serve, to respect authority without fearing it, and to recognise the important distinction between the two.
