A two-day Fishing Training Camp was recently held for 20 young mothers and women aged 14-20 from KwaDlangezwa, organized by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development in partnership with the Linzwa Foundation, Zululand Yacht Club, Ezemvelo Wildlife, BB Bakers, Khulekani Fishing Club, and the National Sea Rescue Institute.
The camp focused on equipping participants with fishing skills and knowledge about ocean conservation. By providing access to fishing opportunities specifically for women, the initiative aims to empower young girls to support their youth-headed families.
Participants will receive licenses to fish in restricted areas, enabling them to sell their catch and contribute to their households.
MEC Mbali Shinga emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Empowering our young women is crucial for fostering independence and sustainability in our communities.
This program not only teaches valuable skills but also promotes environmental stewardship.”
