When people think of substance abuse, alcohol is often overlooked. Yet, alcohol addiction remains one of the most pervasive forms of substance abuse in South Africa. This is according to Mapula Chokwe, who explains that many people dismiss their drinking habits as casual or stress-relieving. However, for Chokwe, what started as “just vibes” quickly spiralled into a serious problem.

“I never used to be a heavy drinker,” Mapula recalls. “But after becoming a first-time mother, the pressures of motherhood led me to drink more.” Like many others, she found temporary relief in alcohol, but the consequences soon caught up with her. “I didn’t realise I was developing a serious alcohol dependency, all because I couldn’t admit to myself that I was overwhelmed with stress.”

For Mapula, the turning point came when she recognised that she needed help. Admitting that she was an alcoholic was the first step. With the support of her family and guidance from social workers at the Gauteng Department of Social Development, she entered a rehabilitation programme and began her journey to sobriety.

“Rehab changed my life,” she says. “It boosted my self-esteem and confidence. I promised myself that once I left, I would apply everything I learned in rehab to my life, no matter how hard it got.”

Mapula’s message to those still struggling with addiction is simple but powerful: “Recovery starts with you. Be honest, admit you have a problem, and ask for help. Don’t let shame stop you from getting the help you need.”
