Last Friday, the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Northern Corridor hosted its annual Disability Games at the Transoranje Sports Complex, offering persons with disabilities the chance to showcase their talents in competitive sports.
Participants from various Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) in Tshwane engaged in a series of build-up games, setting the stage for the upcoming provincial games later this month.
Gloria Mahlangu, from the Mamelodi Association for People with Disabilities, praised the Department for its commitment to the initiative. “These games allow us to discover and nurture talent that can go on to compete in bigger competitions,” she said. Mahlangu also emphasised the social benefits of the games, which bring people together in a supportive and inclusive environment.
One of the participants, Tiego Choene from Atteridgeville, highlighted the intellectual challenge of participating in the game of Morabaraba. “These games, especially Morabaraba, require us to think strategically, which sharpens our minds as we plot each move,” he shared.
The day’s activities included soccer, netball, and various indigenous games, all of which provided an opportunity for participants to compete, connect, and celebrate their abilities.
