Protecting children from all forms of violence is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act No. 108 of 1996). However, recent crime statistics for the first quarter of 2024/25 reveal that violent crimes against children are alarmingly prevalent. The statistics show 314 reported cases of child murder, 424 attempted murders, and 1,596 assaults intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

Addressing and preventing such violence requires a comprehensive approach involving both government and society. Recognising that families and communities are the first line of defence, the Department of Social Development, in collaboration with other government departments and civil society organisations, is spearheading efforts to enhance child protection. This includes the implementation of the 365 Days Child Protection Programme of Action.

To further these efforts, the Department of Social Development will conduct a multisectoral community outreach programme on Saturday, 14 September 2024. The event will take place at Waterkloof Hill Secondary School in Rustenburg, Bojanala District, North West Province, starting at 10:00. The programme will feature birth registration by Home Affairs and discussions with parents and caregivers on topics such as online safety, mental health, bullying (including cyberbullying), substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy. Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the outreach programme.
