Last Friday, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, hosted the vibrant Western Corridor Golden Games at the Westonaria Sports Complex. The activities brought together older people from across the corridor to compete in a variety of sports, including soccer, rugby ball throws, relays, brisk walks, and more.
Among the standout participants was 67-year-old Matshidiso Marumule, who represented Khutsong in rugby ball throwing. Marumule joined the team on a friend’s recommendation and quickly discovered her talent for the sport. “Since joining the club, my health has greatly improved, and I ensure I never miss a training session. I’m excited and proud to be part of this competition and confident that I will excel at the provincial tournament,” Marumule said.
Another inspiring athlete was Maria Mokoena, a seasoned soccer goalkeeper for Eagle FC. Known for her impressive skills, Mokoena trains daily with her grandsons to keep her game sharp. She faced off against the Women of Wisdom soccer team, showcasing her dedication and prowess despite the windy conditions.
The Golden Games not only provided a platform for older participants to showcase their talents but also promoted healthy lifestyles among beneficiaries of the Gauteng Department of Social Development. With breakfast and lunch provided, the activities highlighted the Department’s commitment to fostering well-being and community spirit among older people.
As the provincial games approach, all corridors are set to participate, with hopefuls like Gogo Marumule ready to bring their best to the competition.
