The games saw senior citizens from across the corridor come together to compete in a variety of sports, including soccer, rugby ball throws, relays, brisk walks, and more.
One of the standout participants was 67-year-old Matshidiso Marumule, who proudly represented Khutsong in the rugby ball throwing event. Marumule, who joined the team on a friend’s recommendation, soon discovered her talent for the sport.
“Since joining the club, my health has greatly improved, and I make sure I never miss a training session. I’m excited and proud to be part of this competition and confident that I will excel at the provincial tournament,” Marumule said.
Another inspiring athlete was Maria Mokoena, a seasoned soccer goalkeeper for Eagle FC. Known for her impressive skills, Mokoena trains daily with her grandsons to keep her game sharp. She faced off against the Women of Wisdom soccer team, demonstrating her dedication and prowess despite the windy conditions.
The Golden Olden Games not only provided a platform for older participants to showcase their talents but also promoted healthy lifestyles among beneficiaries of the Gauteng Department of Social Development. With breakfast and lunch provided, the event highlighted the Department’s commitment to fostering well-being and community spirit among seniors.
As the provincial games approach, all corridors are set to participate, with hopefuls like Gogo Marumule ready to bring their best to the competition.
